Monday 24th September 2007
The Launch event and workshop to plan for further delivery of Extended Services in and around Schools by 2010 took place at the HG Wells Suite in Woking on Monday 24th September 2007.
Attended by over 100 people including member schools, partner organisations and voluntary bodies. The day was a fully participative one with outcomes being taken away by the steering group to form and inform the Confederation Action Plan.
Guest speakers included
The youngsters told the conference that their education could be improved by Woking’s schools pooling expertise and resources.
Rory Brown, who attends the Bishop David Brown School in Sheerwater, told the conference: “Schools don’t exist in isolation, we are a part of the wider community.
“What is the best thing? An individual struggling their way into the world or a team pulling together as one? I know which one I’d prefer.”
Rory was one of 14 students from Woking’s secondary and primary schools who spoke to the 140-strong contingent of education figures at HG Wells.
Fraser Wallace, a pupil at Woking High School in Horsell, said: “If we were to become a confederation of schools, we could share resources and I think this could be a brilliant improvement to the students’ ability to learn.”
However, he later told the News and Mail that he had doubts about the Campus Woking proposals — plans to combine all of the borough’s schools in one university-style campus.
Fraser said: “I think they have the right idea of sharing our resources but I’m still not sure about it all being one big school.”
Fellow Woking High student Josie Dix also supported greater collaboration among schools. She said: “At the end of the day everyone wants to do well in their GCSEs.
“I would like to see all the schools combining all their skills and specialities to make sure everyone can get what they want.
“The only thing about Campus Woking is the transport issues which I don’t really get. Sharing resources is definitely the right idea — it’s just a case of making sure it is planned properly.”
Meriam Ahmed, a pupil from Winston Churchill School in St John’s, said that with each of the borough’s schools specialising in areas such as sports, technology, languages and performing arts, it was even more important that resources were pooled.
She said: “They should be able to share their expertise and through this, the schools will be closer and there will be greater links outside in the community.”
Younger children from Horsell Junior School and St Dunstan’s Primary also spoke to delegates about the extra-curricula activities they would like to see extended across Woking.
The youngsters talked about the wealth of after-school clubs available, ranging from language classes and computing through to arts and crafts and sports.
Jack Chisholm from St Dunstan’s, in Onslow Crescent, said: “We have fun, make friends and keep fit in sports club and all of this will help us in the future. It gives us confidence in ourselves and lots of joy and enjoyment.”
Megan King, who attends Horsell Junior School in Meadway Drive, said: “Homework club helps us learn to study, sports clubs can keep us fit and learning to swim keeps us safe if we fall into a river.”
The 10 and 11-year-olds suggested some other clubs they would like to see set up in their schools, focusing on a variety of topics including chocolate tasting, horse riding, snooker and radio-controlled cars.
Alan Cross from Woking Confederation of Schools, which has been 18 months in the making, told the News and Mail about the organisation.
He said: “Our first priority is to develop an action plan that will meet the main issue of extended schools and how they can benefit working families to give children access to a range of activities in a safe and secure environment.”
He said that the confederation had worked hard with the area’s schools and the next stage was to develop a plan that would benefit not just Woking’s schoolchildren but the community as a whole.
Mr Cross added: “We look forward to working with all groups who share our objectives in whatever format we can, be it to signpost services, strengthen existing schemes, fund innovative projects or help start up new groups.
“We know that we can all help somehow.”
